Living in America and eating as most of us do makes it darn near impossible to reach our weight and health goals. Why? A lot of what we eat is nutrition-lite; it has been manufactured for convenience and long shelf-life, not for nourishment and health.

And as Dr. David Kessler, a Harvard educated MD and former head of the FDA, tells us, a lot of what we eat is also downright addictive. Processed foods contain precise levels of fat / sugar / salt – highly stimulating tastes – that that leave us always wanting more. Food companies scientifically experiment with taste, texture, color, smell, appearance, and above all, the empty calories of sugar “to come as close as possible to eating’s ‘bliss point,’ where the brain’s reward system is captured by this immensely complex, artificially designed food that is as powerful as a drug.”

Sugar is everywhere and it is addictive. Sugar and other sweeteners light up the same chemical pathways as addicting drugs like heroin and cocaine. Some say sugar is 8 times more addicting than cocaine or heroin. Think you fell victim to its clutches? It is not your fault – it is by industry design! About 200 years ago, the average person ate 10 pounds of sugar per year. Today it’s more like 120-180 pounds. We simply were not designed to handle this avalanche of sugar. It is a huge stress on the body that can trigger a cascade of health issues including heart disease, allergies, arthritis, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, cancer, etc. Eliminating the stressors and strengthening the defenses are the rewards of this program.

This is a big bite of the apple. As we change our relationship with food during these 5 weeks, we’ll look at:

  • Digestion – How it should work, and what happens when it goes wrong.
  • Blood sugar regulation – How it should work, how it goes wrong when we eat too many sugars and starchy carbs, and what we can do to change it.
  • Fats – The good, the bad, and the misunderstood. When more sugar was added to the diet, it replaced fats. Learn how the right fats are actually good for you and support your body in making healthy tissues and how they help control inflammation.
